What are transferrable skills, as referred to in the job search? Most people who are searching for a job tend to focus on selling their “hard” skills, such as specific technical programs, certifications, licenses, equipment operation, etc., to get a potential employer’s attention. While these skills are incredibly important to highlight, transferrable skills — which are otherwise known as “soft” skills or “portable” skills — are often not given the attention they deserve. Here, I’ll define transferrable skills and offer a few tips for how to best market the ones you have.
