Pay: $15/hour, and if interns are reporting to the site from Bloomington, Davey offers a $15/day stipend to help pay for gas.
Davey Resource Group Inc. (DRG), provides a full array of horticultural, ecological stewardship, lakeshore,
ravine, streambank, bluff restoration as well as traditional landscape maintenance to clients in the private and
public sectors throughout the Midwest.
DRG is excited to offer Indiana University students interested in pursuing careers in forestry and ecology an
opportunity to participate in a forest assessment and habitat restoration project at a site near Edinburgh, Indiana
during the summer of 2024.
Position Description and Responsibilities Duties: Selected candidates will work collaboratively as part of a
team collecting data across large tracts of forest in southern Indiana as part of a timber inventory and habitat
assessment for the Indiana bat, Northern long-eared bat as well as species that are likely to be listed in the near
future such as the tricolored bat. The inventory is intended to quantify the habitat present in order to facilitate
management decisions and assessments of overall summer habitat quality for the Indiana, Northern long-eared
and other bat species. The inventory will include standard forest inventory metrics as well as general habitat
information such as understory composition and density, snag and cull trees, disease information, presence of
invasive species etc.
In addition to the habitat assessment work interns may have the opportunity to assist on habitat restoration
projects that include invasive plant species control, native plant and seed installation, streambank, lake shore,
ravine, and bluff stabilization and restoration, native landscape management and other types of habitat
restoration.
Selected interns can expect to work an average of 40 hours per week during the term of their internship, but
actual hours worked will be highly dependent on workload and weather conditions. All work will be outdoors,
often in inclement weather and in rugged terrain, and will require the use of forestry assessment tools,
ruggedized tablets for data collection/analysis, and backpack sprayers, augers, mowers, etc…
Desired qualifications: Candidates must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs and Google.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, have a good driving record, and be able to report directly to the
work site or to the Indianapolis office as needed. We are seeking teamwork-oriented individuals with excellent
written and oral communication skills, a professional work ethic, and attention to detail and safety.
Additional information: Start times will vary according to the work plan for the day, but interns can expect
the day to start no later than 8 a.m. End times will vary depending on weather and the day’s assignment. Work is
100% field based. Typical work week is Monday through Friday, approximately 8-10 hours a day (this includes
travel if reporting to an office).
- Normal work day consists of: reporting to an office or job site at a set time, participating in daily
stretches, assisting with loading supplies and equipment, performing/achieving worksite’s daily goal,
riding back to the office and assisting with unloading (as needed).
