Curriculum Vitae (CV) Standard

A curriculum vitae is a comprehensive document of your background and academic credentials. The CV is typically used when applying for positions in academia, the sciences, graduate or professional school and various areas of research.  The CV is different from the resume in that readers will take extensive time to read the document.

The CV is a long, comprehensive document that includes the following common categories:

Full Contact Information, Education, Thesis/Dissertation description, Awards, Fellowships, Honors, Grants, Publications, Presentations & Submissions, Creative Work, Research Experience & Interests, Teaching, Academic Service, Conferences, Community Outreach, Professional Training, Languages, Related Work Experience, International Travel, Professional Memberships, References.

When applying to positions, pay particular attention to the posting.  Is the committee asking for a Resume of CV?  The O’Neill Career Hub has prepared a CV Standard for students to use in preparing their own CV.
