Duties

This position is in the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Office of Energy (OE). OE facilitates U.S. investment in emerging market economies many of which have high foreign policy priority and involve interaction with the State Department and White House. OE provides political risk insurance in all sectors covered by DFC and is available to private investors, contractors, financial institutions, and Qualifying Sovereign Entities involved in international transactions. Political risk insurance can cover currency inconvertibility, expropriation and takings, and political violence, arbitral award default and denial of recourse and is available for investments in new ventures, expansions of existing enterprises, privatizations, and acquisitions, where such investments result in positive developmental benefits.

Interns perform a variety of tasks, including:

  • Assist in reviewing preliminary registration letters and supports the formal applications process for political risk insurance.
  • Research investment laws, foreign exchange practices, political environments, and historical political risks in countries of interest to better understand the investment landscape.
  • Assist in coordinating with other departments to gather information on foreign government project approval.
  • Support the review of insurance applications by gathering additional information and documentation as needed.
  • Prepare draft insurance contracts and internal memoranda for review by management.
  • Maintain project status communications.
  • Support the processing of insurance claims.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, determined by background investigation
  • Selective Service registration required for male applicants, unless exempt
  • Must be actively enrolled (at least part-time) in an accredited college or university
  • U.S. Citizenship is required

Qualifications

Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled at least part-time in an accredited institution of higher education pursuing a degree (minimum of 60 credit hours) in Business, Economics and Finance. Successful completion of a background investigation is also required.

Education

Applicants must be enrolled at least part-time in an accredited college or university in a relevant undergrad or graduate degree program. The ideal candidate should have an academic concentration in business, international affairs/development, economics, or finance.

Unless otherwise stated: (1) official or unofficial transcripts are acceptable, or (2) you may submit a list with all of your courses, grades, semester, year, and credit for the course. All materials must be submitted by the closing date of the announcement.

PASS/FAIL COURSES:
If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school’s definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
