Summary
This position is available in the Midwest Region in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Supervision Examinations Office. These are excepted service appointments in the CFPB Pathways Intern Program. These appointments may be eligible for conversion to a permanent position and may be extended past 12 weeks at agency and management discretion. The incumbent serves as a student trainee and receives on-the-job training in the technical aspects of the organization’s work.
Duties
As a Student Trainee (Financial Management), you may:
- Assist in evaluating the adequacy of compliance management systems and programs at regulated entities; assessing compliance with applicable laws and regulations and potential impact on consumers; and conducting reviews to determine whether the regulated entity engages in unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices.
- Support senior Examiners with interviews of institution personnel of various levels to determine their awareness of current laws and regulations, obtain information and documents, and provide feedback regarding examination activities.
- Participate as a member of a compliance examination team by ensuring assigned tasks are completed timely; provide support and assistance to other team members on coordination of examination and other activities with counterparts in other agencies; and support co-workers during meetings with financial institution management.

CONDITIONS OF INTERN EMPLOYMENT: If selected for this position, you will be required to:
- Maintain status of a student.
- Must be pursuing a course of study related to the position being filled.
- During the internship students are only eligible for a transportation subsidy.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
ELIGIBILITY: You MUST meet the definition of a STUDENT for the duration of your appointment.
The definition of a student is: an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. Students need not be enrolled in the summer as long as they are enrolled in both the preceding spring semester and subsequent fall semester. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this program.
Specialized Experience: To qualify at CN-30, you must have at least one (1) year experience at the next lower level in the normal line of progression through federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector that demonstrates experience in the following:
- Using analytical and evaluative techniques to conduct a variety of financial analysis;
- Creating reports or other documents using office automation software programs; and
- Performing financial research
OR
Education: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree.
OR
A combination of post high school education and experience that combined meet the qualification requirements for this position.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Education
This appointment is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. You MUST submit transcripts or equivalent. Education may be substituted for experience as described in “Qualifications.”
Must be pursuing or have a degree in a major study in accounting, banking, business administration, commercial or banking law, economics, finance, marketing or other fields requiring skills related to the position (e.g., analytical thinking, writing) or CPA certificate.
