What is an internship?

 “An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.” (The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)

Internship Requirements:

• • The internship is related to your academic studies
  • Minimum of 120 hours (does not include commute time)
  • Before hours can begin to be counted towards your minimum hours, internship must be submitted for review and approval to the O’Neill Career Hub through this portal link
  • Student must be successfully enrolled in V381/H466 by the University’s enrollment deadline
  • Students must participate and complete all required Canvas assignments, including submitted a self-evaluation and uploading your supervisor’s contact information through SKILLSURVEY
  • Students must confirm that their supervisor completes a final evaluation through SKILLSURVEY (including the total number of hours interned)
  • International students working in/from the US have acquired the proper paperwork

 Internship Experience Criteria For Approval (Adapted from the NACE Criteria):

• The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform
• The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
• The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications
• There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework
• There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience. Supervisor is not related to intern, or another student
• There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor 
• There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals

How long does it take for an internship to be approved?

Once you submit your internship to the O’Neill Career Hub is usually takes 7-10 business for it to be reviewed.  If you need to accept or decline your internship offer sooner than this time frame please call the office. How much does the internship credit cost?

All credits enrolled in will be assessed for tuition based on the students status as in-state or out-of-state and the academic term the credit is enrolled, use this calculator to assess your tuition costs. 

The estimated cost for 1 credit hour for in-state students during the summer 2019 academic term is $291.89 + fees, and for out-of-state students is $1,066.15 + fees.

What about additional internship credits beyond my requirement? 

Students may enroll in elective credits in the course number V380. If you are unsure of if an elective credit would benefit you academically, please consult your academic advisor. All elective credits will be graded as a whole and no partial credits will be awarded. All credits enrolled in will be assessed for tuition, use this calculator to assess your tuition costs. 

The estimated cost per credit hour for in-state students during the summer 2019 academic term is $291.89 + fees, and for out-of-state students is $1,066.15 + fees.  

For each additional credit requested (beyond you initial 1 credit for V381/H466) you will need to intern 80 additional hours.  For example, if a student is interested in earning a total of 3 credits for their internship, the student can registers for 1 credit of V381/H466 (120 hours) and 2 credits of V380 (160 hours) equal to 280 hours at their internship site.  Please see the table below for more details:

All elective internship credits must be approved by the student’s academic advisor. If you are a student who wishes to complete an internship or additional internship hours for credit beyond the required V381/H466 internship component, you must request elective internship credit through this form.  This form only submits your request for elective internship credit—it does not approve your internship. Once your academic advisor approves the elective academic credit need, you will receive permission to enroll in the V380 course for elective credit.

What is my degree requirement if I am in the Accelerated Master’s Program?

• The highly competitive Accelerated Master’s Program grants students a unique opportunity to gain twice the experiential learning. AMP students must complete an internship to fulfill their undergraduate requirement and an internship to fulfill their graduate degree requirement

What type of Internships Will Not Be Approved? 

Internships will not be approved if the following situation exists:

• The student’s supervisor is a relative or another student
• The student does not have a supervisor who is regularly available
• The student is an international student and is doing their internship in the U.S. and has not obtained the proper work authorization (CPT or Academic Training) 
• The employer does not meet Indiana University or O’Neill standards for student recruitment
• The location is in a country or area considered to be unsafe by the U.S. Department of State
• The internship is a Residential Advisor (RA),Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA) position
• The student is enrolling their internship to meet more than one degree/credit requirement

How are internships graded?

All undergraduate internship credits are graded pass/fail.
