As Indiana University students, your email is often subject to phishing scams. Scammers know that students want paid positions, so they may bait you with an enticing email or flyer posted on campus. At the Career Hub, we want to protect your time, money, and resources when helping you find the right position. So, how do you know if a posting is fake?
DIGITAL POSTING

- If this position is supposed to be through Indiana University, it should not pop up as external.
- All student email addresses end with “@iu.edu” or “@indiana.edu”. Additionally, it does not say “(student)” after the individual’s name.
- Google the professor. Does this individual exist? Are they in the department according to the email? Chances are, this is a fake person.
- Application details should not be distributed over text.
- The person signing the email does not match the name of the person from whom the email came.
PHYSICAL POSTING

- Flyers about work opportunities normally have more information about the job and company in the background. This photo does not relate to sales experience.
- $20k is an unrealistic amount of earnings over the summer.
- These descriptions are extremely vague.
- The QR code takes you to a phone number, automatically drafting a message asking for the application over text. Legitimate applications are found on a company website.
CONCLUSION
While there are tell-tale signs of a fake or sketchy opportunity, make sure that you trust your intuition! If you are even questioning the validity of a posting, odds are that it is not legitimate. However, if you have any questions, please stop in the studio to discuss your thoughts and concerns!
