Featured Environmental Employers

Featured Employer #1: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

Are you considering future employment opportunities at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)? While the past few years have been exciting, challenging, and rewarding for those that work in the energy industry the future looks even more dynamic. FERC has been a leader in developing and implementing the policies that guide this country's energy markets. At FERC, you will have the opportunity to work with some of the most talented people in government.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, is an independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. FERC also reviews proposals to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines as well as licensing hydropower projects. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 gave FERC additional responsibilities as outlined and updated Strategic Plan.

FERC's Mission is to assist consumers in obtaining reliable, safe, secure, and economically efficient energy services at a reasonable cost through appropriate regulatory and market means, and collaborative efforts.

FERC's staff works to solve the challenges of managing today's energy markets and set policy direction for the energy industry at large. Recent legislation in the energy industry such as the Energy Policy Act of 2005 illustrates the need for a workforce poised to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing sector of our national economy.

FERC has approximately 1500 employees working for the Commission's Washington, D.C. headquarters and Regional Offices in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Portland, and San Francisco.

Featured O'Neill Student Internship Highlights – Forrest Levy.

Forrest Levy is a second year MPA-MSES student, concentrating in energy policy. This past summer, he worked at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) as the Research Intern. SEIA is a trade association who works to represent all parts of the solar industry through lobbying, facilitating trade between members, public relations, and more. As the research intern, Forrest tracked which corporations had purchase power agreements (PPAs) with solar farms, wrote white papers on solar energy's effect on inflation which was sent to Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, and analyzed over 6,500 solar projects to find the average delay length for a solar project.

Featured O'Neill Student Organization Highlight – OEPSA

The O'Neill Environmental Professional Students Association (OEPSA) coordinated a site visit to the Hoosier National Forest this past Friday. Twenty-one O'Neill graduate students met with 9 Forest Service employees to discuss timber management and forest restoration at three locations. It was a great success where students were able to pose questions related to environmental policy and natural resource management to federal agency employees. The OEPSA executive team is planning a volunteer day for the spring, so stay tuned for their next collaboration with the Hoosier National Forest.
